Instrument Development - Electrical Engineering Technologist

Janelia Farm Research Campus

Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Janelia Farm Research Campus (JFRC) is a unique, world-class biomedical research campus in the metro DC area (Ashburn, VA). Currently, HHMI has an opening for an Electrical Engineering Technologist at JFRC. This position offers a unique opportunity to work with cutting-edge applications in research and interact with top scientists, physicists, and engineers at an innovative biomedical research facility. Over five years, JFRC will grow to over 400 employees in a uniquely supportive campus environment.

Scientific research at JFRC focuses on Neurobiology, and the associated development of improved tools for research in the field. Applications will involve development of microscopy systems with improvements in precision, speed, and sensitivity over those currently available, laboratory robotics for high throughput biological research, and integration of existing tools for increased automation.

Reporting to the Shared Resource Manager for Instrument Development, the Electrical Engineering Technologist will provide highly skilled integration and optimization of electrical/mechanical and automated controls systems integral to automated research systems and in-house instrument development programs. Other roles and responsibilities will include collaboration with engineers and scientists, maintaining an in-depth knowledge of commercial product developments, and troubleshooting systems in use at JFRC.

Preferred qualifications include a minimum of five years experience in developing scientific instrumentation, and five years of electro-mechanical / controls experience. Ability to develop, optimize, and implement hardware, and electronic controls systems is required. Software experience a plus. B.S./M.S. in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Laboratory Science, Mathematics, or related field a plus. The candidate will possess a strong customer-service orientation, excellent interpersonal and communication skills and have experience in maintaining an organized, safe working environment.
